Join master calligraphers as they demonstrate different forms of Arabic calligraphy used to write the Koran. Muhammad Zakariya is an acknowledged master of classical styles of Arabic script. Haji Noor Deen, from China, pens Arabic with a brush in a tradition that was developed among Muslim communities in China and Central Asia. Funded by the Lowell Institute.

The Bukhari Institute (BI) offers classes in various arts and sciences such as Arabic, Calligraphy, Fiqh, etc. BI also sponsors lectures, master classes, and art exhibits at various colleges around Boston.

The Bukhari Institute organizes classes and events for several different groups of people. On the primary level, our classes and events are geared towards people who do not have much background in Islam and Islamic culture who wish to gain more knowledge and understanding of Muslims and their culture.

The next group of people that our classes and events are intended for are Muslim students and professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge of the Islamic faith and it’s arts and sciences. These are intended to both educate as well as ‘add depth to identity.

Finally, for those who are interested in studying Islam in depth, we hope to found a madrassa teaching traditional texts in the traditional Isnad method of learning from scholars who have received permission to teach from their teachers who in turn received permission to teach from their teachers, etc. back to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.) With due respect to other perspectives, we feel that this is the best means of accessing the knowledge that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent with.

Our Mission

Why Bukhari?

We have chosen Bukhari as our institute’s name, since Imam Bukhari’s (AH 194-256) works are a source of agreement and unity amongst the scholars of Sunni Islam. Within the diversity of peoples, opinions, and methodologies that abound, there are points of unity and agreement that Bukhari’s life and name embodies.

Also, his insistence on making ghusul (ritual ablution) and praying two rak’as (units of prayer) before entering any hadiths in his collection teaches us that knowledge alone is not sufficient, but Taqwa (God-consciousness) too must be present.

Finally, that Islam’s premiere scholar of Hadith was a non-Arab from Central Asia is proof of the universality of its teachings. That Boston should produce great Islamic scholars, artists, and thinkers is not an unreasonable goal.

With this emphasis on Unity, Taqwa, Knowledge, and Diversity, we proceed under the title of Bukhari Institute.

The Bukhari Institute is a non-profit organization aimed at teaching, promoting, and presenting various arts and sciences from the vast tradition of Muslim culture. Since its inception in the summer of 2001, it has offered classical Arabic courses, lecture series’ on various topics, and sponsors an annual month long Islamic Art exhibition called “In the Light of Islam.”

Treating ignorance as the root cause of strains between cultures, The Bukhari Institute hopes to bridge the civilizational gaps with knowledge. In a time when representations of the Muslim world are still reduced to Hollywood stereotypes and fringe radicalism, we hope to balance the scales by presenting that which represents the vast majority of Muslim culture over its fourteen centuries of existence. Understanding the artistic, cultural, scientific, and intellectual output of the Muslim world is best achieved when one learns its arts and sciences at the hands of those who have received their knowledge from chains of transmission reaching back through the generations. It is the beauty and depth of this tradition that the Bukhari Institute intends to present.

With this in mind, The Bukhari Institute hopes to serve as a well of knowledge and art from which various people may draw. Providing Muslim Americans (especially the youth) with opportunities to connect with their vast tradition, while simultaneously offering the rest of the American community access to the wealth of artistic and intellectual output that Islamic culture has to offer, The Bukhari Institute hopes to become a bridge traveled by many seekers of knowledge.
